After those two independent fixes align, verify the times and distances associated with them to ensure they’re consistent with your current leg and navigation data. This step adds an extra layer of confidence that your position is accurate.

Only after this verification should you re-plot the confirmed fix on your chart. Updating the chart with the current position gives you a concrete reference point from which to determine and execute the required course change. Taking the step to change course before securing a verified position can lead you to navigate from an incorrect location, which increases risk.
